I’ll bet many of the “ailments” that were (uhhh) treated then are common place now.
The left-handed for instance— My daughter was forced to write with her right hand when she started school. She would surely have been institutionalized (by the system) had she lived in that time period.
Light and dark is best way I can describe St Lawrence’s Hospital.
I had a degree of separation from the asylum in Caterham. Originally called the Metropolitan Asylum For Chronic Imbeciles. I visited it a few times. The patients and hospital were part of the community. Looking back it was Hell. The patients were mainly physically disabled – birth defects and brain dysfunction from accidents and war.
Even though unpleasant incidents at the hospital were revealed in the 1980s, on the whole the doctors and nurses and staff created a home for the patients where they had friends and a family of sorts. Incredibly emotional revisiting it mentally with the benefit of maturity and hindsight.
About your daughter I can remember ‘sinister’ children being made to write right handed. Interesting mind role play between left and right brain. I’m right handed and broke my humerus shoulder at beginning of 2020 and until I had an operation to fix it, I used my left hand to write for about three months. Could sense a difference at a psychic level.
