    The new space wine project will kick off later this year with the installation of “vertical greenhouses” inside a hotel in the capital city of Tbilisi, according to Georgian news agency Agenda.ge. There, floor-to-ceiling pods of soil and seeds (including grapes, strawberries and arugula) will be left to grow under hydroponic lights with minimal human interference, simulating the possible conditions of a controlled agriculture pod on Mars.

    In the meantime, Georgian wine experts are hard at work trying to figure out which grape varietals might best survive harsh Martian conditions. Over the next few years, researchers at Tbilisi’s Business Technology University plan to simulate a Martian environment in the laboratory, exposing soil samples to subzero conditions, high carbon monoxide levels and thin air meant to mimic the atmospheric pressure at “20,000 feet [6,000 meters] altitude on Earth,” The Washington Post reported.

    These experiments likely will not bear fruit until at least 2022, but scientists already have a hunch that white wine will fare best on the Red Planet.

    “Whites tend to be more resistant to viruses,” Levan Ujmajuridze, director of Georgia’s vineyard Laboratory, told The Washington Post. “So, I’d imagine they’ll do well against radiation, too. Their skin could reflect it.”

    Physicists have built a ring in which pulses of light whip circles around each other and the normal rules that govern light’s behavior no longer apply.

    Under normal circumstances, light displays certain kids of physical symmetry. First, if you were to play a tape of light’s behavior forward and then backward, you would see it behave in the same way moving in both directions in time. This is called time-reversal symmetry. And second, light, which can move through the world as a wave, has what is called polarization: how it oscillates relative to the motion of the wave. That polarization usually stays the same, providing another type of symmetry.

    But inside this ring-shaped device, light both loses its time-reversal symmetry and changes its polarization. Inside the ring, light waves turn circles and resonate with one another, producing effects that don’t normally exist in the outside world.

    Researchers already knew that, under certain circumstances, when light is bouncing around inside optical rings, it can lose its time-reversal symmetry. The peaks of its waves don’t turn up at the point that symmetry dictates they should inside the optical ring. But in a new paper, published Thursday (Jan. 10) in the journal Physical Review Letters, a team from the National Physical Laboratory showed that this can happen at the same time as spontaneous changes in polarization.

    A small sprout rose on the moon – for the first time in the history of astronautics – from cotton seed aboard a Chinese lunar landing gear, scientists said yesterday, on Tuesday.

    This shoot was born in a special structure resembling a lattice that is located inside a container aboard the Chang’e-4 landing gear that landed on the lunar surface earlier this month, according to a series of images provided by the Institute for Advanced Technology Studies of Chongqing University.

    In this experiment, for the first time in the history of space exploration, plants were grown on the surface of the moon.

    The Chang’e-4 probe, named after the goddess of the Moon, made the world’s first landing on the “dark side” of the Moon on January 3, which was the most important stage in the development of Chinese astronautics.

    Researchers from Chongqing University sent on board this device the “lunar minibiosphere”, which is an 18-centimeter container resembling a bucket containing air, water, and soil.

    Cotton, potato and Arabidopsis seeds (plants of the cabbage family) are planted in this container, as well as fruit fly eggs and yeast.

The concentration of NF-kB fluctuates over time, and these swings impact the genes and subsequently, the condition of cells.

      Google have been adjusting the algorithm for some time to suit themselves.

      On here I used to have some success with tags and categories etc but then the likes of Merovee were listed a long way below BBC News and restaurants and hotels about three years ago when the Algae Rhythm was altered. Don’t bother much anymore.
